Sender Name:

Eloqua allows you to enter whatever you want in this field. This freedom is nice, but it also means that you have to be vigilant to ensure consistency.

Options for the Sender Name:

  1. The name of the program/department/center/organization
  2. A person’s name (whoever signed the email)
  3. “Wisconsin School of Business”

Guidelines:

Sender names are vital to whether or not a person will open your email. You want your emails to come across as trustworthy, and recognizable.

  • Be consistent! (across emails and with the website).
    • Copy and paste in the name to avoid typos
    • Use the same name for the same type of email (your newsletter should always come from the same sender, for example)
    • Discuss with your department or MSC prior to making a change.
  • Avoid using a person’s name if that name won’t be recognizable to the audience.
    • If you do, try to add their title or department for clarity (exp: “WSB Dean Vallabh Sambamurthy” instead of just “Vallabh Sambamurthy”).
  • If you send a lot of emails, it may be appropriate to include variations of your name. For example, “A.C. Nielsen News”

Sender Email Address:

  • Email address must end in @explore.wisc.edu
    • If it doesn’t, emails can get marked as spam and all sorts of problems occur.
  • Use one of the emails on the standardized list below to maintain consistency.
  • Don’t:
    • Enter a real email address
    • Enter an email address that includes a person’s name. This can be confusing, because @explore.wisc.edu addresses are not real email addresses

Reply-to Name/Reply-to Address:

Whenever someone chooses to click “reply” to an email, this is where their email will go. Use a real email address here. You can have it go to a specific person, or to your department email. Make sure the Reply-to Name is consistent with this email address.

Sender Names and Addresses: Standardized List

Note: as written above, sender names are more flexible than sender email addresses.
